Termites have been around for over 250 million years, descending from the same ancestor as the cockroach and mantid species. Despite all the different types of termites that exist, there are similarities.
Termites or white ants as some call them are very much like the ant species although they are not related; live within highly organised social colonies and survive by ingesting cellulose found in wood and wood products.
They exist in a colony in several "forms" or castes, each having a particular structure and function for the survival and maintenance within that colony. The order consists primarily of a singular King and Queen, workers, Soldiers and Winged Reproductive's or 'Alate's'. It is the workers that are responsible for the damage to our buildings.
Termite colonies can reach well over 1 million in size, their colonising flight patterns usually take place close to the main Nest which occur mainly from November-December and March-April when moderate temperature and high humidity conditions prevail.
